Sun
Ikaros, feathers, wax drops, strings
Curious Fish
Shore of the Island
Ikaros
We
all respect Old Greece's glory,
have
read the ancient, tragic story
about
the boy named Ikaros,
who,
with his father Daedalos,
tried
to escape from Crete on wings
built
of feathers, wax and strings.
His
dad had told him to take care:
„Of
the sun and sea beware!
It
is essential to steer clear
of
either one, remember, Dear!“
Junior
promised to obey,
but
got reckless on the way.
He
felt so light,
forgot
all fright,
kept
gaining height,
was
having fun,
moved
near the sun!
The
wax was melted by the heat,
he
tumbled down head over feet,
into
the sea – found his wet grave.
Ikaros,
why did you not behave?
Oh
Sun! You did not even try
to
let this daring child get by
unscathed,
just to continue flying
home
– instead of dying.
Why
didn't it occur to you
to
command a cloud or two
to
pull a veil across your face
and
save the youngster through your grace?
A
matter of relentless fate!
All
my questions come too late.
A work photo, just to demonstrate what a difference a beaded edging makes.
A glimpse behind the scenes.
P.S.:
The Mediterranian Sea was the unfortunate boy's death, but strictly
speaking not his grave: Ikaros' body was washed ashore on a small
island and buried there by his father, Daedalos. The island was
called after Ikaros, „Ikaria“.
